Burlington, Vermont - New England's Ideal City for a Family Home


The first time I went to Burlington, Vermont, I was not thinking about buying a family home, but was rather ecstatic that I had found a city in New England, outside of Boston, than had an Urban Outfitters. This may seem slightly materialistic, but regardless, this meant a lot to my sixteen year old self. I had only ever been to Warren, Vermont, the pinnacle of the perfect small town, where everyone has enough rolling green hill to themselves. My best friend Sarah was from Warren and when I would visit we would go to Burlington as a treat, and spend the weekend with the few friends we had who went to college there. Lying just 45 miles south of the Vermont--Canada border, Burlington, Vermont boasts small town charm, yet is by any definition a city. The Burlington metro area in fact, is home to approximately one-third of Vermont's population, many of whom chose Vermont specifically to purchase their first home.Tucked within a relatively young country, New England boasts some of the MLS listings Burlington and most interesting history of the United States, and Burlington, Vermont, founded in 1785, is no exception. The city lies on the east side of beautiful Lake Champlain, which separates Vermont from New York. Although a family home on the lake would be ideal, virtually any locale within the city is conducive to raising one's kids. Burlington is often cited as a place to watch, telling of its growth and the amount of people choosing to buy their first home there. Burlington is a place to watch because of what makes the community livable, such as environmentally smart growth, a new sort of urbanism, and a relaxed living standard. There are four seasons, which fluctuate between warm summers and snowy winters, with an idyllic spring, and world-famous fall. The city has one of the countries lowest metropolitan unemployment rates, and has a great deal of both public and private schools to educate one's children. The city also has three Colleges, the biggest of which is the University of Vermont (UVM).
